 Matt,
  The ImageMagick (Note: that is not misspelled) is very useful for
image manipulation.  Perl has a nice module that uses these libraries.
It also comes with a few command line utilites for image manipulation.

Liberty is also a nice area.  I can also vouch for linux being used
in the schools, as I work for the school district.  The district is
growing at a rate of about one school per year, and there are a lot
of new resteraunts and shops moving here.  The only bad thing is the
traffic getting out of Liberty on I35 is lousey.
