1.0.3 and inserted some graphics in the some spreadsheets and tried to
merge but it crashed.

I've read that 1.1beta is much more stable. I would grab that one. The
reason I think it will be able to do it is this: the OO.o file format is
native XML. The images are stored in cells and in writter documents via
an XML equivalent of HTML <IMG> tag. Theoretically, the XML:IMG tag
would be imported during the mail merge.

Thus the power of markup is harnessed.
