Last night I converted my wife from Win98 to Mandrake 9.0! I already had her
using OpenOffice and Mozilla, so the transition was fairly easy, as far as I
could tell. The main applications she uses day in and day out were almost
identical to what she was using in Windoze. She likes the fact that Konqueor
can preview jpg files. It will be easier for here to sort through and delete
all the digital pictures she has collected over time. Overall, I think she
likes it.

Her only complaint is that it was running kind of slow. I have stopped
several services that I don't think she needs, and that has helped a bit, but
I noticed in top that a user lp is running programs imagetoraster and
rastertoprint. These appear to be related to CUPS, but what do they do? I
don't see these programs running on my machine. That could be that my mchine
runs them so much faster that I don't see them in top. They seem to chew
alot of CPU when they run, which is about every 10 seconds or so. Each time
they have new pids. I'm wondering if I can get rid of these, and if so, how?
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jim
