All the complaints notwithstanding, I imagine the majority of us citizens are
actually reasonably happy to be paying taxes when they're applied in a
generally useful way.  We have a hard time agreeing about what to spend the
money on, but then we can hardly agree on no-brainers like (the foolishness
of) access to automatic weapons.

Compared to Enron and Worldcom, the bureaucratic part of the government is
looking pretty good.  As for being controlled, these days I feel a lot more
controlled by corporations than the government.
