I've heard that too, and my one experience with a multi-function modem that
was connected via USB was that it wasn't working well with W98, so we
switched to the Ethernet connection and it worked a lot better.

USB support is in the current kernels, but I don't know if it's mature yet
or not as I don't use it.  Ethernet support has been in Linux from the
beginning, and I would recommend using that.
