I think all of the /dev audio device files are in /dev/sound, while most of
Gnome (fer instance) seems to expect them to be in /dev.  I can create
symlinks, but they are destroyed at reboot.  Not sure what, if anything, the
answer is.  Sound in KDE seems to work pretty well without handstands.
