This might actually be a good case for doing some recompiling. If you're
running RedHat, the default Kernel is optimized for a 486 (although I think
they install more optimized kernels for newer processors now). Optimizing
your kernel might help, and possibly there are other elements in the
playback stream that could be tuned/tweaked/optimized.
Also, the various Intel and AMD processors have a number of different video
extensions in them (MMX, etc.), depending on which chip you have. Some of
the pieces of the playback process may be set up for a different type of
chip, and that might be something you could improve. (I know that if I try
to use the GLIDE stuff, it looks like I'm running an XT here.)
