Sorry, I have no advice for things to do after the drive is toast, but as a 
preventive measure for next time, I am pretty much sold on a new fairly 
simple backup plan called Mondo:

It backs up your stuff to CDs, which are bootable so that you can recover if 
your system won't boot.  It handles ext2, reiser, vfat, etc.  Handles 
dual-boot systems well.

It also makes for an easy way to re-allocate your filesystem across a 
different set of partitions, or switch from ext2 to reiser, or add a new hard 
drive, or clone your system, or a few other things.
