Apache Install Woes

I'm new to installing things in Linux... Previously, I've used Apache as it
came from the Distro. But now, I think I've screwed up the httpd.conf so
much that it's worth reinstalling.
I've downloaded ver 2.0.39, and gone from .gz to .tar to a directory. But,
when I run ./configure, I'm told:
| configure: error: no acceptable C complier found in $PATH
| Configure failed for srclib/apr
Am I doing anything that's obviously wrong? Does this error mean anything to
any of you?
