try selecting the text with the mouse, then click the middle mouse
button in the place you want to paste. Important step, do not select
anything else in between.

As far as the linuxconf problem. It sounds like a security problem.
Have you tried running linuxconf as root? If it works then it is a
security issue. Otherwise, you might try checking your log files, and
if nothing there, crank up the logging level just long enough to find
out what is going on.
