I'd guess its your choice of distro...

Version 3 of VMWare supports:
(taken from their support site -
http://www.vmware.com/support/ws3/doc/ws30_guestos2.html#1034043)

    Linux

    Caldera OpenLinux 2.x, Workstation 3.1
    Mandrake Linux 8.0
    Red Hat Linux 6.2, 7.0, and 7.1
    SuSE Linux 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2
    TurboLinux 6.0

    FreeBSD

    FreeBSD 2.2.x, 3.x, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4 on IDE virtual disks

I have RedHat 7.2 happily existing in a virtual machine on my desktop
here at work...
