I'm not sure about doing this with a different kernel, but I've had luck
using the bootable install CD in "rescue" mode, or even a tomsrtbt
floppy.  

Mount your hard drive (mount /dev/hda5 /mnt -t ext2) and then chroot
/mnt, you should be able to just run /sbin/lilo and restore the loader.
