I would look at the version of what you are trying to compile, and then
check for a newer version. If one exists try it. If there is not then I
would then go back one version. AIX does have some interesting features
that affect how it supports applications compared to other UNIX flavors.
Number on that list is the dynamic Kernel. A little FYI watch out for AIX
5L, it will be a merger of AIX and Linux, and it will be available for Intel
and RS/6000 platforms.

Be careful with upgrades. Do you have HACMP running, or have any shared
devices between machines. If you do then you must do your upgrades on these
machines in parallel, because firmware will be upgraded in OS upgrades. If
it is not otherwise contraindicated, I would upgrade to v. 4.3.3.06. I
would also do this from the CD updated that would be mailed to you as a part
of a support contract, and not do it from IBM's download site. We have had
some trouble with downloads at times having conflicting versions of
libraries bundled in the downloadable packages.

I hope this helps. I work at a large data center with lots of blue, so feel
free to email me and I will ask others who know more than I if you have
specific questions. All my suggestions are intended to be added on top of
the ones you already have gotten, not to replace them.
