I'm not saying those black boxes aren't cool. At some point you have to ask
yourself what your time is worth. Easy is good but I'm talking about the
DESIRE to have the knowledge to do it yourself with $5 nic's and a 486.

We are techies. We can't help it.

Actually I think the Linksys model with built in 4-port switch is about $99
at Best Buy, $97 with a single port.  But you are right, it can all be done
with your old model PC.  I know of a place you can get old 3Com NICs for $5,
etc.
