In the most recent versions of Red Hat and it's derivatives, when you are in
X (which is the default) a disk with rpms or a specific directory structure
will launch the RPM manager automatically.  All you have to do is pick the
software and click install.  It is getting very close on the install front.
Just as long us geeks can still hack at source code, even if the rest of the
world dislikes compilers, linkers, and loaders.
