Kernel Make Dep error

I am getting the following error while compiling a 2.4.16 kernel after
untarring the source, doing a "make mrproper" and a "make menuconfig".  I do
a "make dep" and after running a while, it gives me:

.depend unterminated call to function wildcard missing ")". stop.

Other info:
	Pentium 120 / 32 MB RAM / 128 MB Swap
	Trustix 1.5 (Redhat derivative)

	cd /usr/src
	rm linux   # (removing link)
	tar zxf linux-2.4.16.tar.gz
	cd linux
	make mrproper
	make menuconfig
	make dep
	[Error]

Am I doing something wrong?
