Linux/X fonts

I am a newbie.  I am distressed with the crappy fonts once in X: in xterm,
in Netscape, whatever.  I can hardly read the text, and seem to have very
few options for customization.  What's up with that?  Do I have to *buy*
Metro-X, or is this a broader Linux problem that is being worked on even as
we speak?
