Well, keep in mind that your system was unuseable in the first place. Those tools are meant to shrink or expand working partitions to a new size, not to fix screwups in the partition table or overlaps like you had. On my work box I have a mysterious partition 4 (NTFS) that randomly refuses to work or gets corrupted. I have lost a ton of data on that partition. But it is probably something to do with me imaging the root partition multiple times a day and one or more of the images not knowing anything about that partition. Essentially, while the tools I found claim to have resized the reiser partition successfully, they left corruption in their wake and made the system unbootable. YMMV.
