  What an ungainly concoction!  For the very devices that have limited
memory and bandwidth, they force a long email address on you!
Virgin Mobile's techies apparently understand this, and got a separate,
SHORT domain name for such purposes: number@vmobl.com,
and since I'm not charged to receive messages, I have my IM Away Message set
up with a mailto: link to my phone so anyone can text me whenever they need
to.  It's come in handy several times already.
