Assembler is for wimps real programmers use machine code
for complete speed optimization. ;-)

BTW: byte code languages are *arguably* a form of HLA (e.g. java, .net).

My person recommendations would be: java,c,c# and asp.net.
Although, I would not really recommend anyone enter this field. The market is
flooded with talent and the majority of people making money at it are the 
companies teaching them.
