Where are there detailed instructions and tutorials on installing the
kernel.  I have tried to follow the README with some problems.  The
kernel-help from tldp.org has been removed?

The new kernel boots but all of my hardware does not work, usb trackball,
onboard kinnereth lan, onboard sound,...

When booting to the old 2.4 kernel, all the hardware works.

I have compiled and "make modules_install", but it seems that some drivers
or modules are not loading.

I am new to the list.  Is there a searchable index for topics like this?
