That is, the person starting the mailing list needs to be an ARPA member, not necessarily the persons receiving and responding to the mailing list. - MLIST ($30 annually) 'majordomo' list - up to 500 members mailing list archiving - and digesting, direct management of your - list and configuration via 'mkvlist' Their server is running NetBSD 1.6, and SDF (Super Dimension Fortress) at its core is a UNIX educator resource, so I'd expect that they keep up with the security patches and so forth. You'd have control over the list, real search scripts, and probably better spam controls. If you guys did something like what SDF does to keep out the spammers (charges a basic $1 fee for a shell account which includes E-mail) to get on the mailing list, that would probably cover the annual fee for the list as well as only allow people who are willing to pay the $1 to have access to the list, which would keep out most spammers as well. I don't know if KCLUG has ever charged a membership fee, but $1 annually is probably within most people's disposable income.
