Hey, what would cause the monitor to look like a TV that has its VHold
all out of wack?  

I copied the monitor settings from the XF86Config file from the "Linux on
Laptops" site (Toshiba Satellite 410CDT) and created a new file using the
xf86config script.

The distro is Slackware 9.1, and otherwise the X server seems to be
running fine.
