The clues on this issue clearly point to a problem with the NIC driver.  
Anybody have a line on a better driver for gentoo?  Is there any way to get 
the source for the debian driver and port it to gentoo?  Maybe building the 
driver as a module so it's easier to swap would be a good idea at this point.
