The main thing you need is a clean break between systems - if you end up sliding across the contacts from system 1 to system 2, Bad Things Happen. One solution is to leave a "blank" between your two main systems: A: Windows Box B: No Connection C: Linux Box Of course, that means only two systems on the four port switch. The other is to switch to a "blank" position, then back to a live one. This may work with up to three systems on a four port switch. Frankly though, for more than two systems or for any serious work, it's worth the money for an electronic switch. Get one that will emulate the mouse when it's not online so reboots are easier if you can.
