I found a package in Mandrake Club that's actually a Debian program for 
Gnome on PPC that someone has ported to MDK 9.0 586.  The program is 
called "Acme", and it at least allows my volume, mute, and power keys to 
work properly.  It maps some of the other MM keys, but I'm not sure what 
it's having them do.  It's a daemon that runs and intercepts the events.

Anyway, I got my volume key working.  Just thought you'd like to know.
