The system that has this problem worked fine for
years.
Old slackware system.  Had a kernel panic one day and
when I rebooted the system that is where the problems
started. 
Was still able to get to the system via ssh, but even
that won't login. 
Just some more information in case there may be
somethng else that pops into mind. Will check the
other sugestions though
