If you count RedHat's graphical anaconda installer, I guess I've run X on an AMD K6-233, which is the lowliest box I've done a full RH install (although I've installed debian and caldera on P75/90 class systems...I don't remember if the caldera install ran X or not, but I know the debian one didn't). I am, however, about to jump on the desktop linux bandwagon, and am working to put together a new system that will run X and open-office. > > Basically you can compile your kernel to > > access your graphics hardware directly ... > > A related question: What's the minimum level of hardware YOU have actually > used to recompile a kernel? A compaq Prolinea 590 (Pentium 1-class 90 MHz) with 32 Megs. While I've pushed my 486 systems into service as web-servers, I never set one up with a development environment.
