I never got a reply on how to do this, so here's the resolution for 
newbies.  You need to configure automount.  Update /etc/exports on the 
server and /etc/auto.master and /etc/auto.home on the client machine 
which will automount home directories for users when they log in.  The 
man pages will give you the formats for customizing for your environment.
