You should look for a gcc-2.95-something.rpm. All gcc after 2.95 are flaky/broken. If I recall RH7.2 ships with that stupid broken gcc-2.96 and gcc-3.0x. Don't use these! Go to rpmfind.net and get a gcc-2.95 rpm and install it.
