Well, there's your really simple answer right there - if you have X Windows configured to support multiple resolutions, just hit Ctrl, Alt, and the plus key on the numeric keypad to switch to your lowest-defined resolution. When you are using anything other than the highest res, moving the mouse to an edge of the physical screen causes it to scroll around the logical desktop that's sized the same as the highest res 0 in this case you'd be seeing a quarter of the total desktop. And when you're done, just hit Ctrl-Alt-numeric_minus and you're right back to 1280x1024, with no right-clicking and messing with Display Properties menus required.
