While trying to solve the same problem you wrote about with cdrecord,
I searched with google: "cdrecord illegal mode for this track"

Found many pages of folks with the same problem.

Question:
Did you ever solve the problem?

I have been able to BURN using xcdroast as the front end, using  DAO
mode
This works with Data and Audio. but the TAO gives the errors that you
described.
