Thanks all for the suggestions.
I've got it working. Very strange.
I'm not sure if I made a typo in my
resolv.conf file or it needs to have
the extra lines I added.

here is what I came up with to make it work:

search my.internal.domain
search my.isp.net
nameserver 216.223.224.7
nameserver 216.223.224.6
nameserver 172.21.12.1

But I don't think I have a dns server running on my 
firewall system and my desktop PC only has the first
two nameserver lines and no search lines in it. So I
must have had some typo in it.
