Remember that these protections rely on a good, usually independent ground 
circuit to work properly.

What I did was run a wire from the ground terminal out a window to a stake 
driven in the ground underneath.  Instant, isolated ground.

Your biggest danger on one of these older houses is where someone has gone in 
and done inexpert partial conversions, mixing modern "romex" with old 
knob-and-tube without knowing how to keep the connections clean and safe.
