I stumbled on to a class of software yesterday that I thought others
here might find interesting. It's called "concept mapping" or "mind
mapping" software. It helps you render an ontology (a specification of a
conceptualization). What this means for the layman is that you have a
searchable mini-map of virtually any information you can imagine. I'm
using it to keep track of my tasks -- very efficiently.

Two mature products:
This one is free form and the most mature:

And last but not least, this short video explains how the human mind
works with regard to assimilating new information and parsing existing
information. IMHO, it should be required viewing for anyone who teaches.
It also explains why students don't remember anything after they are
tested over the material. You will need to use the win32codecs extended
