I have never had luck with any version of Nautilus. My suggestion is two 
fold:

Switch to Debian (stable or testing) and use the KDE file browser - it 
is MUCH more stable and better featured to boot. Frankly the file 
browser is the most important part of the desktop and THE reason to use KDE.

It is possible to use the KDE file browser in other desktops (the 
default desktop in the Libranet dist of Debian has all file browsers 
available from the task bar). For a while I ran Gnome desktop with the 
KDE file browser. (I now use the KDE desktop because I like the kweather 
applet).

Also, not only is the KDE file browser better than Nautilus, it is has 
better features than M$. Of course, there is a small learning curve 
involved, but the preview features and other details are well worth your 
time.
