Where to find old/cheap hardware in KC (WAS: RE: DamnSmallLinux on Retro hardware)

My best buy there was my home theatre system. First thing I got there was
an LCD projector. It didn't have a remote and was hence stuck in
"upside-down" ceiling-mount mode, but that's how I was planning on mounting
one anyway. I also got my screen (it says "property of Kansas City
schools" or something like that), amplifier, and 2 of my speakers there. I
have a whole $400 in the theatre system (80" screen) and $60 of that was
brand new cabling so I could get the VCR, PC, Mac, Dreamcast, Genesis, and
Xbox all to work through the projector. Couldn't have done it without
Surplus.

Two other things that are good to get there:

1) Network Hardware - Most hubs and switches are a dollar a port.

2) FURNITURE!!!! - I'd go there first if I needed a desk, shelves, file
cabinet, or office chair. Bought a great oak desk for my wife there a
couple of years ago for about $40.

I used to volunteer there on weekends when I first moved to town, and I
found it to be a rewarding place to work. They essentially take what
businesses discard and provide jobs to people and hardware to non-profit
agencies with what they take in. They do good work there, and they are
completely local.

I've been there a couple of times. It has a good variety of stuff.
Anything from network stuff to desktops to MACs to severs. I didn't buy
anything, but a friend of mine got a laptop for his mom. I think it was a
IBM P3 600mhz, 128MB RAM for like $300. I think it might have been a
390X. He was able to test it out there and the battery works well.

I talked to one of the guys there and he says they get truck loads of
hardware all the time. Its fun to just go and look through the piles of
stuff. There is lots of junk, but if you look around you'll find some
goodies.

Anyone want to share with us any good buys from surplus exchange?

This is my first post. Some of you may have seen me on IRC. (trend)
