Subject: Blank Console After X

I've installed SLS Linux on a 33 MHz 486 with a Tseng Labs ET4000
video card with 1 MB of video RAM. After exiting from X the console
no longer has proper colors and setterm doesn't work properly. For
a while I was fairly happy with "setterm -foreground red" which left
the console with bright blue (cyan?) text. Now it stays black no
matter what options I've tried with setterm.

Is there an easy fix?
