First let me apologise unreservedly to Nicolai, I really mustn't post to the
net after having been awake that long.
Now a more reasonable^H^H^H^Hed response:

I would have to agree with you, I can think of only two possible
justifications for what is distributed with SLS:
1) For teaching purposes about the uses of `.
2) So the profile would work even under a true Bourne shell.
Both justifications are a bit weak, IMHO, so I would suggest to Peter
that he changes this aspect of the SLS, for what I think is a very
good reason:
One of the things I like about Linux is that (subjectively at least) it
is faster on a given hardware setup than any other PC UNIX I have used
(SCO, ISC, Unixware, Consensys SVR4.2). Many people's first and only
experience of Linux is going to be SLS, so a lot of people's opinions
of Linux are going to really be opinions about SLS. Consequently, SLS
is going to be an ambassador for Linux, and should conduct itself
accordingly :-).

Andy
