I confess - I haven't read the BASH manual - I largely use it as if it's
ksh with which I am more familiar. Only so many hours in the day, and all
that (it's amazing how much time it's taking to stabilise my mail news
and BBS feeds over SLIP). However, I contend that whilst my example
is suboptimal for BASH, it's a LOT faster than the value shipped with SLS,
which seems more intended to show UNIX newbies that ` lets you do a lot
under UNIX shells that DOS users are totally oblivious to.
I consider your reaction somewhat extreme, and insulting. Two days ago,
I felt that it would be a nice thing to put something back into this
group that I have been reading since it's creation on the wrong side of
a one way feed. As someone with many years of professional UNIX sysadmin,
kernel development, and comms experience I foolishly felt I had something
to offer this group. Now I find that I simply cannot be bothered.
Back to lurking,
Andy
