From: adam@netcom.com (Adam J. Richter) Subject: splitting comp.os.linux --> linux-activists newsgroups Date: Sun, 30 May 1993 03:48:58 GMT
With all of the discussion about splitting comp.os.linux,
I'd like to make a slightly different suggestion. What do people
think taking the various linux-activists channels (GCC, XWINDOWS,
KERNEL, etc.) and reflecting them out onto alt.* newsgroups such
as:
alt.os.linux.gcc
alt.os.linux.xwindows
alt.os.linux.kernel
...
Messages posted to any of these groups would be also be sent
to the corresponding linux-activists channel. Messages sent to a
particular linux-activists channel would be automatically be posted
to these groups. New alt.os.linux.* groups would automatically be
created or deleted when the corresponding linux-activists channel
was created or deleted. This fluidity in newsgroup create would
require using the alt.* hierarchy, because it is incompatible with
the conventions for creating comp.* newsgroups. I also think that
because Linux is developing so quickly that this scheme will be
more quickly adaptable to the new things that people work on in
Linux (e.g., alt.os.linux.isdn, alt.os.linux.wysiwyg).
Besides being a more convenient way for a lot of Linux
hackers to follow the linux-activists channels, it would probably
sort comp.os.linux discussions topically so that one could actually
visit the appropriate newsgroup and search for postings relevant to
one's question.
I think that, in addition to linux-activists gateways, there
should be a few more linux newsgroups. One that I would like to
see in addition to the already proposed comp.os.linux.questions is:
comp.os.linux.answers -- a place for posting all Linux-related
FAQs.
Anyhow, that's my two cents worth.
