[I got flooded with requests to summarize, so I'm posting the
solution I came up with.]

A lot of people seem to have the same minicom problem with scrolling.
Here's how I fixed it:

grab the source - minicom14b.tar.Z off of tsx-11.mit.edu
I think it's in /pub/linux/sources/usr.bin/Communications, but
don't hold me to that.

Recompile. For some reason the binary I got with the SLS package did not
understand some command line options the documentation says it should.
Go figure.

Read the Install file. There are instructions for adding a termcap
entry and an few lines to /etc/profile to check for console logins and set
an environment variable to use your new termcap entry while in minicom.

Do the setup thang... ("minicom -s" as root)

Log out and log back in; You should be set.
