Speaking as the owner of an 80386 machine, I would have no objection.
I assume that the capability to generate 80386 code would remain,
and that no as-yet-undiscovered obscure bugs would be found ;-)

I would be willing to pay the price of a small compiling speed penalty
to make your task easier.
