Subject: Can't boot 0.99pl10 w/o math emulation

I couldn't boot 0.99pl10 on a 386 without a math chip. The boot time
message is:

        math_emulate: 0023:00000016
Kernel Panic: Math emulation needed in kernel

Odd thing is, I did choose math emulation when running make config. I tried
this twice to make sure. Also tried "make Image" and "make zImage": the
same result. As far as I can see, the makefiles are passing on the correct
parameters (IFDEF MATH_EMULATION ...). What am I missing?
