In article <1tgnl1INNcre@uwm.edu> you write:
>Let's not re-invent the wheel. Let's just write our own WordPerfect clone!
Here here. The standard word processor at out University is WP 5.1 (DOS). You
only have to see the massed ranks of non-science students who queue up to
type their essays on this ridiculous word processor to realise what `everyone'
is using. Like it or not they are using Word Perfect, and probably under DOS.
If we make a WP 5.1 clone, we gain a huge new audience.
>Come on, folks. Face it. WordPerfect[tm] is a de facto standard.
>How many times has Lotus 1-2-3 been cloned? Why not WordPerfect???
Absolutely. For every industry standard that we clone we gain a lot more
users. Start with the WP, then Lotus, then Paradox perhaps. It's all possible.
In my opinion there is more massed knowledge and, more importantly,
enthusiasm out here than in any corporate development lab. We just have to
avoid cloing things a little too closely...
>*ARE* there any WordPerfect clones out there? It might make things a bit
>easier if we had some rough source-code to start from...
Doubtful, the DOS world likes shareware better than freeware and tends to be
less free with its source code as we are.
