Bingo. I have a Logitech MouseMan (non-cordless), and it would not work
with the Logitech config. I tried switching to MS serial, and everything
works fine now.

BTW, this isn't meant to be a flame, but since you thought of the
correct solution, why didn't you try it out before posting?
