Are you sure your /dev/console is set up as /dev/tty0 not as /dev/tty?
Do an ls -l /dev and see which it matches. I have by /dev/console on
/dev/tty8 since I don't like an error loop to block up all my VCs.

BTW I would have replyed by mail but the original author had a + in his
address - I suggest he gets rid of it ASAP.
