Subject: [Q] X Screen Refresh, Kernel Compile Problem
Date: Thu, 6 May 1993 16:19:25 GMT

I have a few questions, but first my configuration:

   486DX Vesa Local Bus 33mghz
   8 meg ram
   Diamond Stealth 24 VLB
100meg Linux Root partition, 46 meg Linux User partition,
   8 meg Swap partition, 80 meg Stacker'd DOS/Windows
14" Mega Image Monitor (max Vert refresh 60 Mhz)
I am using Linux 99pl9 (I tried to upgrade from 99pl8
but am not sure I was successful)

Ok, now to the questions:

   1. I have managed to get a useable 640x480 X session and
am not far off from an 800x600 X session. I am using
the OpenLook window manager (very nice!). However, when
I open a window, such as the pull down menu, which overlaps
another window temporarilly, the image of the overlapping
window remains on the overlapped window long after the
overlapping window has dissappeared. I have to select
REFRESH from the Utilities menu to clear up the screen.
This is highly annoying. Is there anything I can do to
       clear up the problem?

   2. I have been trying to recompile the Kernel but am getting
compile errors relating to Loop.o. Everything goes fine
up to a point then I get a large number of Redeclaration
of various symbols. I tried to upgrade from 99p8 to 99p9.
Have I somehow messed up and damaged the source files?
I can post or email my make.out file if neccessary. Help
       would be appreciated.

   3. I have noticed that both sunsite and tsx-11 have multiple
copies of utilities (like vgaset) which are not dated the
same. (i.e. older, old, new) copies existing at the same
time. Is this intentional. I am looking for the latest
vgaset which is supposed to have a way of indicating the
monitors max vertical refresh rate I think.

   4. (Last question): When doing a make config I am asked whether
I want Kernel Profiling Support. What is this?

Thanks,

Ken
