Subject: DOSFS and other (network?) problems
Date: Sun, 2 May 1993 06:36:38 GMT

I'm having several problems; the original installs were from SLS 1.00
(1) I'm using the 0.99.9 kernel, with version 12 of the dosfs. I mount
two dos partitions, one <32 megs and primary, the other > 32 megs
and in the extended partition. I mount them with the GID of a
new group I created. The biggest problem is that nobody, not
even root, can "mv" any file to either dos partition. I get
        the error "mv: /dosdata/file_I_tried_to_mv_there: Operation
not permitted". The "cp" command works fine.
(2) I have all the network stuff compiled into the kernel, but no actual
network hardware. During bootup, I get the following:
/etc/inet/rc.net: fnord(123.123.123.123)ioctl: Invalid argument
portmap, ...
where fnord and 123.123.123.123 are dummy hostname and IP number,
and ... indicates that the boot seems to continue from there.
        Is this normal?

(3) A friend of mine has Linux installed, and it detects and uses his
serial mouse (COM1) no problem (not that he actually has disk
space for X). However, he has a modem on COM2, and it's only
recognized from dos. Bootup lists only one serial port. It's
a generic, cheap, 2400 baud internal modem. Should I give him
a bootdisk with "auto-configuration of the serial ports" enabled?
What does this feature do, anyway?
(4) Speaking of modems, the SLS distribution came with kermit, which I can't
figure out how to use sz/rz with, and minicom, which in vt100
emulation mode doesn't ever scroll the screen (logged in
either to a vax or to a BSD UN*X box) (though when I rz, the
little window in the middle does scroll, and "minix" terminal
mode also scrolls). Does anyone have a suggestion for a better
program than minicom (it was better in the days of kernel 0.96,
but it still quit and hung up if you ran it in an xterm and
resized the window!), or a way to use zmodem and kermit?

Thanks for any help anyone can give me. Please mail replies, though I
certainly don't object to posting copies. In case of lost return address
or lack of .sig appendage, I'm at rohrer@math.grin.edu.
