I am answering you via email, because I actually don't know how to
send messages to c.o.l.
A few days ago I had a similar problem, I scrambled my ext2-partition
and some part of linux or the fs deleted the partition-table entry. I
was able to recover it by deleting the partition-entry for that single
partition and reentering the entire partition information with fdisk.
I didn't loose any data, because fdisk doesn't affect the partition
itself. You better don't run mke2fs, that would certainly destroy
your data.
Perhaps that can help you, if your hd is not physically dammaged.
